Types of Projector Screens

You can classify projector screens into two groups. They can either be a front projection type or a rear projection type. Other models in stores include simulation projection, motorized projection, and special screens.

Front Projector: Pros – they’re inexpensive, you get plenty of options, and wider view angles. Cons – you will need to control your ambient lighting or you lose contrast.

Rear Projector: Pros – allows brighter lighting in the room and they don’t produce shadows. Cons – cost, narrow view angle, and these screens are usually bulky.

Simulation Projector: These screens come in different configurations. They include cylindrical, bowl/semi dome, curve screens, and cave screens (F&R Projection).

Motorized Projectors: Motorized screens are retractable via a motor. They provide a means to tuck the screen away when not in use. Some can even be concealed.

Non-Motorized Projectors: In contrast with motorized screens, these projector screens are fixed. They are a good option if you want to install a screen in your movie room.

How to Select the Best Projector Screen

People usually choose their screens by brand. You can do that too, of course, but just remember that the leading brands are usually a bit pricey.

There are also other factors to consider other than the brand or price of a projector screen. You should consider the screen type, fabric, size, and accessories.

We have already touched on the different types of screens earlier. You also need to choose between wall mounted or ceiling mounted versions.

The next step is to figure out which fabric works best for you. The most common fabric is white (some are bright white) but you will also find grey fabrics too.

The next step is to decide on the screen size. You should measure the available space on your wall and choose a screen accordingly. Common configurations include HDTV (16:9), video format (4:3), and square (1:1).

Finally, you need to select your screen by the type of accessories that come with it. You will basically need the following: remote, cables, mounting brackets, and speaker mounts.

Care and Maintenance of Projector Screens

Retractable screens are somewhat easier to clean and maintain than fixed screens. It helps to keep the dust away from the screen surface when they roll up.

However, you still need to clean your screen from time to time. You will need some warm water, a spray bottle, and some clean rags.

First step, dust off the screen using one of your dry rags. Run the rag gently over the surface of the screen. Make sure to avoid leaving any marks.

Next step, get your spray bottle and fill it with warm water. Do not use detergents or any kind of cleanser. They may damage your screen or cause it to fade.

Spray some warm water on one of your clean rags. Run it gently on the surface. Apply gentle pressure on spots where dirt has built up.

Grab a dry clean rag and use it to wipe your screen dry immediately after cleaning. Never air-dry your screen since it will produce water damage.

Why Get a Projector Screen?

The biggest and most obvious reason for getting a projector screen is its size. That alone enhances your viewing experience making it something truly absorbing.

Adding a projector screen to your home theater makes things larger than life. It will be like going out to the movies – an experience for the entire family.

Other than having images and video fill your full field of vision, projector screens are actually easier on the eyes. Notice that your eyes hurt more when watching TV than a projector.

Projector screens also offer better picture quality compared to your TV. In most cases, it will create crystal clear video but you need to match it with a good projector.

Of course, even the best projector screens have their downsides. For instance, they are usually pretty expensive. Setting them up can be a bit troublesome.

Lighting can also reduce the picture quality of these screens. On top of that, the projectors that come with them can have fans that will be pretty loud.
